The Evolution (fashion) of Alicia Keys

Hey Everyone,

As we all know Alicia Keys' Album, As I Am, comes out tomorrow ("if ya don't know, now ya know") and what better way to celebrate than to talk about the evolution of her style.

Like the growth that can be heard in her music, you can see the style growth in her fashion. More dresses and pants, less jeans and t-shirts. Either look, she has always been fabulous (i know how to spell).

When she was fresh to the music biz, she had a real tom-boyish style. Don't get me wrong, it was tom-boy, but still real cute. Almost ghetto fab with the cornrows goin back and beads at the ends.
Keys had an Aaliyah (r.i.p) style going on there.
(the fully dressed and still sexy)

Now she has the sophisticated look going on mixed with a funky, eclectic style. At all the awards shows, she's in form complimenting dresses, heels and no longer has the cornrows.

She has such a grown up style, I Love It. A++

Hell No, We won't....EAT!!!??? ... Part 2

Day 6.... The Columbia students who are on "Hunger Strike" mean business. The five is, for the moment, down to four (one member had to be rushed to the hospital). However, the attention and showcase of peaceful demonstration is gaining a strong, vocal following. The student group behind this, has organized ways to support them.















Here is a statement sent via their Facebook group message:

"Other ways you can support include signing our petition if you have not done so already (http://www.petitiononline.com/kwzchen/petition.html), coming out to our vigils, which are held every night at 9pm at the Sundial, donating water, blankets, pillows, sleeping bags or flashlights, and telling all your friends, listeners and professors about the strike and the demands."

The students on campus have been participating in events for the "Hunger Strike", including Marching to Lee Bollinger's (President of Columbia) house, Candle light Vigils, a growing Facebook group, the support of Faculty, and the biggest...setting up Negotiations with the schools hierarchy

The NCAA Women's Basketball Season starts with some wonderful matches.
A double header in North Carolina at the State Farm Classic. The Lady Tar Heels(#7) against Arizona St. (#12) followed by Oklahoma (#8) vs. U of Maryland (#4).

So I thought I'd take this time out to mention some ladies that I consider to be both a "Beauty and a Baller". Now, this is MY opinion, so IDGAF what YOU think.

80>20 Rule

Are you down: 80/ 20 rule-?

People always think and wonder about what life brings them. You go through so much but for what reason exactly?
You start asking yourself all types of questions like why can’t I pass this damn test, or where did Hell did all my Money go to so fast when I just got paid last week, and many more.
Lately, the biggest questions being asked are about a boyfriend/girlfriend or about that person you have a crush on. You have girls are asking questions like:

“where are all if any good men go”

“why is he doing this and that to me if he’s suppose to love me”

“Why can’t I just find the right one for me?”.

Then there are the guys, asking questions like,

“Why are you always nagging me?”

“Why are you getting so emotional?”

There’s so much that a girl or guy wants, but seem to never find or get what they want.

Some Saturdays’ ago, I went to go see, “Why did I get married,” and found myself relating to certain parts and happenings from the movie.

If you have not seen it yet, go for yourself or for your girlfriend/boyfriend. It'll shed some light onto issues that present themselves in relationships, it'll be good for you both. Out of all the themes, issues, and guidance that the movie gives, the biggest one for me was the 80/20 Rule.

Let’s break it down this 80/20 rule….

In relationships, you will only get about 80% of what you want and need. That 80 can be a variety of things. It can be what you have now, or what you might have just ended your relationship with, or even what you just want. The question you need to ask yourself is, do I have it? or not at all?. The problem is that it’s usually after the break up where one may realize that they were really getting that 80% but just didn’t realize it. After being single for a little while, you may come across another male or female who might seem like they are the one (AT FIRST) for you. It is then that you realize that this new person is only giving you 20% of what you really want, and that you left 80% behind.

I’m not saying stay and wait forever to find out if you’re getting that 80%, but just think real hard about what you’re not getting. If there is more good than bad, that should tell you something. If there are more happy than sad times should also make you think about things. So take it is, think a little, and don’t stress yourself. That one is out there. Just let it come to you. I leave you with this African Proverb, "When searching for your mate look with both eyes, so you can look for exactly what you want. When you find that person, close one eye". In other words, after you decide that you've found that person, understand that you will need to compromise and not dwell on the 20% of things that might upset you.

Holy Stokke's....

In our age of instant celebrity and fame for doing nothing. There is one person who is not wanting the extra attention. U of Cal student athlete Allison Stokke.

Along the lines of Tennis sensations Maria Sharapova and Anna Kournikova, comes another athlete that the press (mainly male bloggers) want to turn into a sex symbol. Except, this girl is not embracing it. Here is some excerpts from a May 29th article that featured Stokke on the front page of the Washington Post...

"In her high school track and field career, Stokke had won a 2004 California state pole vaulting title, broken five national records and earned a scholarship to the University of California, yet only track devotees had noticed. Then, in early May, she received e-mails from friends who warned that a year-old picture of Stokke idly adjusting her hair at a track meet in New York had been plastered across the Internet. She had more than 1,000 new messages on her MySpace page. A three-minute video of Stokke standing against a wall and analyzing her performance at another meet had been posted on YouTube and viewed 150,000 times."

"Allison Stokke doesn't like the internet attention she's had
Stokke read on message boards that dozens of anonymous strangers had turned her picture into the background image on their computers. She felt violated. It was like becoming the victim of a crime, Stokke said."

The blog "With Leather" is mostly associated with turning her into a superstar "sexy athelte" while still in HIGH SCHOOL (she was 18 though). Here is a statement that they made...from

"How would I feel if it were my daughter that got this unwanted attention? Well, I don't know. I'd like to think I'd feel fortunate that my daughter was a record-breaking athlete and honors student with no physical or mental deformities. It's 2007, people: time to realize that attractive women athletes will always be recognized and -- yes, sometimes -- obsessed over. Is it right or wrong? I don't know. But it's reality."

My take on it is two fold. Since this started while she was in high school I can understand her dismay and slight fear as to the attention that she's getting. Her track meets are surrounded by photographers and fans that want to see her in "uniform". It's something that most athletes, besides cheerleaders don't have to deal with. She shouldn't have to deal with the celebrity "circus" while actively pursuing an academic and athletic career.

On the flip side, pole vaulting doesn't normally get any attention. Also, I haven't heard of too many professional pole vaulters getting any media press outside of the Olympics. So in the latter stages of her career, this "attraction" that the audience has for her will help her bank account$$. She's almost as marketable as Candice Parker and I hope that someone in her camp recognizes that. Not to put the pressure on her now, but for her financial interests later.

But who am I, maybe that's not what she wants at all. I don't know her, and her rise to stardom just shows how much free time people have. All the best in life, and track.

That has been the scene on the recently controversial Columbia University. 5 students are now engaged in a Hunger Strike and have listed their reasons and Demands.

Some of the Demands are:

"We demand that Columbia expand ethically, support Ethnic Studies, reform the Core Curriculum, and improve administrative support for students of color, students of faith, and LGBTQ students:

Because our cause is multi-faceted, our demands call for change on all levels and ask for a spectrum of responsibility:

• a more systematic response to hate crimes from Public Safety
• a more collaborative expansion effort from the administration
• a revision of the Core that encourages critical engagement with issues of racism and colonialism
• more resources and support for the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race (CSER), the Institute for Research in African-American Studies (IRAAS), and the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA).

We don't just want new programs or changes and improvements to existing programs. We want lasting changes in the power dynamics between the university, its students, and its community.

Yes! Until the university completes a community-wide pilot program exploring the best possible responses to acts of hate on its campus and fundamentally changes the power dynamics of its decision-making process these students will not eat."

Go Columbia Students... It seems as though students from all levels are ready to stand up when they feel as though things are unjust. First, college students (primarily) forced the nation to pay attention to the circumstances of the Jena 6 situation and now a Hunger Strike.

So by now most everyone has heard about Duane "Dog the Bounty Hunter" Chapman and his recorded excessive use of Nga. Short synopsis, Dog's son is dating a black girl...Dog doesn't want that, because they use Nga in the house a lot...and well I'll let him tell it...

"It's not because she's black. It's because we've used the word (Nga) sometimes here. I'm not going to take a chance ever in life of losing everything I've worked for for 30 years because some (Fcukin) (Nga) heard us say (Nga) and turned us into The Enquirer magazine."

Way to put your foot in your mouth...Dog

The internet has been going crazy cause Dog did an apology interview November 6th (I'm a lil late, had more important things to do) on Fox News Hannity and Colmes show (like that's the most watched network by black people). Wasting no time, Fox News put out a rushed transcript of the conversation. Personally, I thought it was sad and hilarious. I mean, some of the things he was saying was almost comical if not for the fact they were his real words. Such as:

"I thought that I was cool enough in the black world to be able to use that word as a brother to a brother."

"I've always taken pride to be the white guy that can talk to the black people, that can refer to them truly as a brother from a different mother."

"HANNITY: But did you use it regularly?

D. CHAPMAN: Not that regularly, only probably as a greeting to a black person where they'd come up, "Hey, my N-dog." And I'd be like, stick my head in his chest, "Hi, man, how are you doing?"

I wouldn't turn around and say, "Hi," and use it out loud, because I'm going to get beat up, but I used it as a — when I meet a brother, and we shake, and we say, "How's it," that's how it is. It's not a degrading thing at all.

HANNITY: You said this is how you would greet — you told me privately — Snoop Dogg. Is that true?

D. CHAPMAN: Yes, that's exactly right. I mean, you just can't walk up to someone, "Hi." You know, you'd get hit in the mouth. But when a brother says that to you first or you realize that there's — there's a special connection that I thought I had between me and black America.

And I used to say, "I'm black, too." In other words, I — my whole life I've been called a half-breed, a convict, king of the trailer trash, this and that. I take that and stand.

So when I stood there and said, "I kind of know what you feel like, because I've been there, too," I felt that I could embrace and like, as brothers or, even as a black woman, say the word.

You can't — I now learned I'm not black at all. And I never did it out of hate. This sounds so stupid. I always did it out of love. Other white guys would be like, "Boy, who does Dog think he is? Dog can say that." And black guys would be with me and walk with me and respect me.

So I went too far with that. I got — I should have never, ever..."

We're do I stand, personally I DON'T CARE. I never watched the show before. I know that people of all colors say Nga, and that those that are not black (or spanish) understand that they can't say it in public without a negative image. This is less offensive then Michael Richards (Kramer) or Don Imus, because he did not use make offensive remarks in a public setting. However, he's gonna suffer financial losses ($$) for his actions.

Who benefits the most...Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, they get camera time for this one.

American Gangster Album Review

The wait is over.

After giving an explanation as to why he went back into the studio and made an album with drugs, money, and "the Life" as his subject matter ("I was inspired by the movie"). Jay was given the pass to return to Reasonable Doubt.

So, at first I was gonna just steal LowKey's review (www.youheardthatnew.com), but I decided to write one myself. Not because LowKeys was bad, but because non-Jay fans (other blogs/review sites that I checked out) have been reviewing this album. So, I thought a big Jay fan should give a review of the album, while I'm listening to the album.


INTRO
They took some dialogue from the movie, then opened up with some of their own. They go through defining "A Gangster". Favorite line

"To be a Gangster, swagger is not a must it's a liability a cliche"

If you seen the movie you'd understand this and other parts of the album.

PRAY
Opening with a prayer, showing the human side to
"A gangster". Giving some of light at what can be learned at a young age,

"what we call corrupt he called paying dues
now when the rules is blurred as they are what am I to do
but pray, pray the lord forgive me"

AMERICAN DREAM
I really feel this song and the beat is so soulful, he sampled "Soon I'll Be Loving You Again" by Marvin Gaye. The song is the actual introduction into the "Game" and how it starts off as "A dream". In the middle is my favorite lines, showing the naivety when beginning Jay states,

"know where to cop? (Naw)
got a connect (No),
who in the F knows how to be successful."

In the third verse, he then details how you start your growth mentioning the "connect" for the first time.

HELLO BROOKLYN ft. Lil' Wayne
It's got that late-'80s 808 thump, which I think goes well with the album. What started at a song about a girl (who's name just happens to be "Brooklyn"), turns into a song painting a picture of the place where Jay is from. Most interesting line comes from Wayne,

"she told me she like my New Orleans demeanor,
and so i said goodbye Katrina and Hello Brooklyn".

NO HOOK
A very personal song, talking about the situation with his family that led him to go full time into the "game". How it's raised him and how hustle is what everyone does. Goes away from what the actions of the main character in the movie,

"like Frank Lucas is cool but i ain't trying to snitch"

ROC BOYS
The party anthem of the album, and the "high point" of the "life". n acceptance speech after winning an award,

"Speech,
first of all i wanna thank my connect,
the most important person with all due respect"

Reminds me of "The Mack", at the Player's Ball when Goldie is crowned the Mack of the Year.

SWEET
Is almost like the morning after reflections and feelings. Reflecting on the influence that he has over his family,

"If I would've grew up to be a doctor, my nephews would've grew up to do the same".

And the feeling that comes with knowing that your family and crew is doing well together.

"I'm even better, I'm eating better
best thing about it, is my nga's eating together".

It's a real "Sweet" feeling.

I KNOW
Many will mistake this for a love song. However, it's not about love of a woman, it's about the dependency that comes with addiction. Jay, puts himself as the drug and plays conscious to the woman telling her

"I know what you like, i am your prescription
I'm your physician, i'm your addiction"

Second verse Jay continues with the metaphor of the song, then comparing the addiction to shopping

"like every color Giuseppe's, your guilty pleasure is me
Its so much fun, you shun therapy"

I really like how Jay has masked the "actual" song, so that only those that listen in will pick it up (sorry for spoiling it, but you would not have gotten it anyway). The ending of the addiction is wonderfully depicted at the end of the song with the drug (Jay) trying to hold on.

"How could you deny me so vehemently?
Now your body is shakin' trying to free it of me
And your soul is in control, trying to lead it from me
And your heart no longer pledge allegiance to me
Damn, i'm missing the days when you needed the D"

Party Life
The most conversational song on the album, with Jay talking over the chorus, in between the song and of course with the ad libs. It's the smooth and grown song and the last signs of real enjoyment of the "life" on the album/movie.

"hey baby when you used to fillet mignon
its kind of hard to go back to hamburger helper."

It's the older, "made man" that has no real worries.

"I'm in a whole other leauge, nga's never catch me

Ignorant Shit
Now I've heard this song before and liked it, I believe this is the only song that's really out of place (Blue Magic is a bonus track). Jay took a shot at the claims that Hip Hop influenced Don Imus's remarks.

"I missed the part where it stopped being about Imus
What do my lyrics got to do with this SHIT?"

Jay also shows the complexities with rapping and how people are tuning too close to "entertainment" .

"SCARFACE the movie did more than Scarface the rapper to me
Still that ain't the blame for all the shit that's happened to me "

Jay also, takes a shot at the critics of hip hop that don't show the same forceful stance to pop stars.

"Are you saying what I'm spitting,
Is worse than these celebutantes showin' they kitten, you kidding?"

SAY HELLO
Personally, I think this will be the underrated song of the album, it's the longest and most conscious song. As the album is coming to a close, the public is now putting the "life" under a microscope.

"They say i'm a menace
That's the picture they paint
They say a lot about me
Let me tell ya what i ain't"

So Jay is speaking out on the ills of society to justify his reasons for being in the "life". "

"Only God can judge him, only he without sin
Can tell me if my means can justify my ends."

The second and third verse are especially crazy, but I'll just post up a couple of lines.

"And if Al Sharpton is speaking for me
Somebody get him the word and tell him i don't approve
Tell him i'll remove the curses
If you tell me our schools gon' be perfect
When Jena 6 don't exist
Tell him THAT's when i'll stop saying bitch---BIIITCH! "

SUCCESS ft. Nas
Starts off with my favorite quote from the movie, "We can be successful and have enemies. Or we can be unsuccessful and have friends." I like he talks about the stress that can come with success.

"Is this what success all about,
a bunch of nga's actin like bitches with big mouths,
all this stress all i got is this big house,
couple cars i don't bring half them shits out,
all this Ace of Spade I drink just to piss out,
I mean I like the taste could've saved myself six hours"

However, to me the most controversial part came from Nas. He states

"Worst enemies wanna be my best friends, best friends wanna be enemies like that's what in."

I'll let you decide what you think of that.

FALLIN'
Fallin plays as the summary of the album, beginning with his feeling when he first got into the game,

"When i get to one brick, then The Game i will depart with
Got to one brick then i looked to the sky, said
Sorry God, i lied, but give me one more try"

To getting locked up and losing the empire that you built,

"When the letters start to slow, when your commissary's low
When your lawyer screams "Appeal!" only thinkin' bout a bill
When your chances are nil, damn, gravity's ill... "

Finally, how to leave the drug life (and the rap life),

"Fight, and you'll never survive
Run, and you'll never escape
So just fall from grace, damn...."

The movie concept of the album is now finished, starting with a "prayer" and ending with the lead character "falling". Jay continues on with two bonus tracks.

BLUE MAGIC
Two parts stand out to me on this song. First is the mention of the Iran-Contra scandal (that brought a lot of drugs in during the Reaganomics era),

"Blame Reagan for making me into a monster
Blame Oliver North and Iran-Contra
I ran contraband that they sponsored"

Secondly,

"Push (push) money over broads, you got it, fuck Bush"

I just don't know which one he's talking about???

AMERICAN GANGSTER
A Just Blazed production that has bits and pieces of the rest of the album. The final closing of the album.

Womens Volleyball

So the other day, I got a chance to catch up one of my favorite #1 teams, Penn State University.....

Led by juniors Christa Harmotto, Nicole Fawcett and sophomore Megan Hodge.


The Nittany Lions are at the top of their game and the consensus Volleyball number 1 and showcased it on ESPN against Purdue(Yes I watched 2 of the 3 sets). Penn State is now at 22-2 on the season and looking good (i love the spandex ladies).

Rounding out my top 5 womens volleyball squads are Nebraska, Texas, Washington and Stanford (all of which are doing better than their football squads). So be on the lookout for the game of the week on Nov. 8th Stanford at University of Washington.

Pac Ten Love

It’s time to start lovin the Pac 10. I’ve been hesitant to put them in the elite category, because they haven’t had the speed and defenses of the SEC and ACC, or the elite teams of the Big 12 and Big 10. It’s been USC and not much else for some time. But now the Pac 10 is good…real good. You want speed? You want great quarterbacks, unstoppable running games? How about defense? Or a Heisman trophy winner not from USC? A national champion? With wins over Michigan, Nebraska, Tennessee, and Colorado, the Pac 10 has shown that they can compete. If Oregon runs the table, which they should, they could make a compelling case for a shot at the BCS title. With 3 wins over current top 15 teams, a quarterback than can do it all, and a much improved defense, they definitely have the resume. All the Pac 10 has to do now is pry away 2 out of these 5 teams – Hawaii, Boise State, Fresno State, BYU, and Utah – make a conference championship game, and play their games at 3:00 to get some national respect.

In other news, I’m embarrassed for picking my Hurricanes to win the ACC. I’m going back to my preseason pick for this one – Clemson. I haven’t seen the speed of C.J. Spiller since well, you know.
