The Famuan Jermaine FletcherProduced by CNN and the National Association of Black Journalists, the contest was designed to promote the "Black in America" tour, which made it's first stop at FAMU on April 8.
Each contestant had to submit an iReport on one of the topics given. Jermaine chose the topic "What does it mean to be Black in America?"

- He asks the questions to those interviewed in a way to get a deeper thought out of people. By doing so, he turns one question into three deeper questions.
- He also keeps it within the perspective of students at and from HBCU's (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).
- My FAVORITE part is when he asked a white female student about her experience at an HBCU and if she would recommend HBCU's to other non African-American Students

I think that being black in America today means that you have to deal with the traces of residual racism left behind by our ancestors and ingrained in their children, grandchildren and successive generations on both sides of the white and black spectrum. I feel that we all have improved greatly since then. When I go through my day I don't think about the idiotic divides among race and ethnicity. As a matter of face I choose not to go to an HBCU because I have faith in the facet that people are capable of taking down those barriers. And know that people would accept me as a black person, with my kinky coiled hair, as someone no different from them self just as I have accepted people with pale skin, blond hair and blue eyes as a person no different from me. So the idea of being black in America should change to the idea being a person in America.
